How to Track Link Clicks: UTM Parameters, Short Links and Analytics

By Nishit Baria · Updated

You can track link clicks in three ways: short links with built-in analytics, UTM parameters read by your website analytics, and a link-in-bio dashboard. Used together they show which video description, story or newsletter actually brought people in. Setup takes less time than most people expect.

Short links count clicks on any destination, UTM tags label traffic for your own site analytics, and link-in-bio tools count taps on a page of links. Each covers a gap the others leave.

A short link (like linkio.site/l/abc123) passes through a tracking service before sending the visitor to the destination. The service records the click, then redirects in a fraction of a second. This works for any destination, even sites you do not own, such as a product page, an album or a video. It is the easiest way to start.

UTM parameters

UTM parameters are tags added to the end of a URL, after a question mark, so analytics can show which campaigns send visitors (Google Analytics Help):

https://example.com/shop?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=story&utm_campaign=summer_sale
ParameterWhat it describesExample
utm_sourceWhere the traffic comes frominstagram, newsletter
utm_mediumThe marketing channelstory, bio, email
utm_campaignThe campaign, product or promosummer_sale
utm_contentWhich variant, to tell versions apartbutton_a
utm_termThe paid keywordrunning_shoes

Google Analytics and similar tools read these tags and group visits by them. UTMs only help on sites where you have analytics installed.

If your links live on a link-in-bio page, the tool can count every tap on every link and tell you where the visitor came from.

How do I combine them for the full picture?

Use all three: short links for clicks on any destination, UTM tags so your own site analytics knows the source, and one dashboard that brings it together. In LinkIo every link on your page is automatically a short link. When a visitor arrives with UTM parameters, LinkIo records source, medium and campaign with the click, so you can filter Insights by campaign with no extra setup.

What should I measure?

Start with clicks and unique visitors, then add where visitors came from and what they use. These five numbers answer most questions about what is working.

  • Clicks: total taps on a link.
  • Unique visitors: how many different people clicked. A big gap between clicks and visitors means a few people click repeatedly.
  • Referrer: the site or app that sent the visitor (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Google).
  • Location: country and city, useful for planning launches, ads and events.
  • Device, browser and OS: whether your audience is on iPhone, Android or desktop.

On the free plan, LinkIo's analytics cover the last 30 days; Pro extends the history.

The three most common mistakes are counting bots, naming UTM values inconsistently and tracking without acting. Each one quietly distorts the numbers you rely on.

  • Counting bots. Link previews and crawlers can inflate numbers. Use a tool that filters bots and duplicate taps. LinkIo does both before a click is counted.
  • Inconsistent UTM names. Instagram, instagram and IG show up as three sources. Pick a naming scheme and stick to it.
  • Tracking without acting. Check your numbers weekly, cut links nobody clicks, and move winners to the top.

Does click tracking need personal data?

No. Good click tracking can work without identifying visitors. LinkIo does not store visitor IP addresses or user agents. Unique visitors are counted with a one-way hash, and location comes from coarse, network-level data (country, city and region).

How do I start tracking clicks with LinkIo?

Create an account, add your links and share the short URLs. Insights then shows results by link, country, device, referrer and campaign.

  1. Create a free LinkIo account.
  2. Add your links. Each one gets a short URL and a QR code.
  3. Share the short links in your bio, stories, videos and emails.
  4. Open Insights to see clicks by link, country, device, referrer and campaign.

FAQ

A short link with built-in analytics. You paste in a destination, share the short URL, and the dashboard counts clicks without any code or site access.

What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters are tags added to a URL, such as utm_source and utm_campaign, that let analytics tools show which source or campaign sent a visitor (Google Analytics Help).

Yes. Short links track the click before redirecting, so they work for any destination. UTM tags only report on sites where you run analytics.

The redirect adds only a brief step before the visitor reaches the destination. LinkIo records the click and then redirects.
